About Melbourne Photographer Kate Powick
I am currently based in Melbourne, though still spend considerable time in my ‘second home’, Port Douglas in Australia’s beautiful Far North Queensland. I have also lived in the UK and travelled extensively, and no, never without a camera in hand! One of my favourite early photos was taken in my 20’s, some reasonably basic film camera in had, as I wandered around the magical streets of Cesky Krumlov. I was on my own, the streets were very quiet, it was foggy, the light and colours muted, and to a young Melburnian, it was really quite magical. That was possibly the start of this love of travel, and my ongoing desire to capture the essence of other places with just my eyes and whatever camera I had with me at the time. Covid and Victoria lockdowns also taught me to utilise these same skills within a 5km radius, and to appreciate what is close at hand as well as what lies over the seas (and we had considerable time to practice that ‘art’!).
Nothing brings me greater joy that watching a viewer’s reaction to an image, if it makes someone stop and consider, even for a moment, then I feel tickety tick, job done.
I have studied photography at Melbourne's Photographic Studies College and RMIT, have exhibited and sold work in Far North QLD, and have been recognised and awarded in national and international competitions. I am of course still learning and practising this art of photography whenever I am able to.
